Beneath the Garden Magazine is a bi-annual magazine publish poetry, fiction, creative non-fiction, and hybrid works related to film or literature.

Content Guidelines

  • All published works must be related to film or literature. Your work must be about or inspired by film or literature. When you submit, you are welcome to include a reasoning for how your work relates to film and/or literature.

    • For inspired works, include a line from a film, book, and many wore.

  • We do not tolerate any form of bigotry.

  • We do not accept translated works. Currently we don’t have the resources to properly check if the translated works sent in are accurate to translation.

  • Submissions that use any form of AI for content generation will be immediately rejected.

  • While we do have creative non-fiction listed, literary essays are included and encouraged regarding film or literature in this genre.

  • We do not accept previously published works. Unless, the previously published work is out of print or has no digital footprint. (We do not consider work on personal social media accounts to be previously published.)

  • Include the titles of each of your pieces.

Submission Guidelines

  • Please do not include any form of identifying information in your submission document along with the file name.

  • We accept simultaneous submissions (a piece of work that has been submitted to other publications), but please let us know as soon as you can if you are planning to withdraw your submission(s). You can email us at beneaththegardenmag@gmail.com with the subject line [WITHDRAW (genre) SUB - last name, first name]

  • Submission must be pdf, docx, or .doc. If your submission(s) require a different type of file, please let us know.

  • While some responses may come sooner, all decisions will be sent two months after the end of each submission period.

  • Please do not submit additional work until you hear back from us.

  • You are welcome to include an artist statement in the google form for your piece(s). We understand that your identity, background, or experiences can play a heavy and direct role in the writing content. We want to give you the opportunity to share more context about your experience and how it connects to your work, if you feel comfortable doing so.

Rights for Published Work

We reserve the right to make minor grammatical changes, but the overall editing responsibility lies with the author.

If you submit to us, you acknowledge that Beneath the Garden Magazine reserves worldwide First Serial Rights, as well as non-exclusive Electronic Archival Rights to show your work on our site over an indefinite period of time. Upon publication, we ask that Beneath the Garden is acknowledged and credited first as publisher.

  • Send up to 3 poems in a single document (docx. , doc. , or pdf).

  • Please do not include any identifying information in the document or document file (name, email, address, etc.)

Fiction

  • Our word limit is 4,000. For prose that is 500 words or fewer, you may submit up to three flash pieces in one entry. (These flash prose pieces will be considered individually, unless they are connected.)

  • Please do not include any identifying information in the document or document file (name, email, address, etc.)

Creative Non-Fiction

  • Our word limit is 4,000. For prose that is 500 words or fewer, you may submit up to three flash pieces in one entry. (These flash prose pieces will be considered individually, unless they are connected.)

***Beneath the Garden includes literary essays under this category. Literary essays are included and encouraged regarding film or literature in this genre.

Hybrid

***Beneath the Garden defines a hybrid work as one which possesses more than one meaning-making mode (language, genre, art, anything visual, and/or surprise us!). By its nature, hybridity borrows and subverts traditional form to create anew. If your work doesn't fit into conventional boxes, this space is for you.

  • Our word limit is 4,000. If the word count stands less than 500, you can submit up to 3 pieces in a single document. Otherwise, please limit the submission to one piece. 

  • Please do not include any identifying information in the document or document file (name, email, address, etc.)
