“I have come to believe over and over again that what is most important to me must be spoken, made verbal and shared, even at the risk of having it bruised or misunderstood.”

— Audre Lorde, Sister Outsider

At Beneath the Garden magazine, we look to uplift writing that unearths and explores different perspectives of the stories that have been told and have yet to be told. Like the 80% of the ocean left unexplored there is so much left unsaid. Within this space of unsaid, language needs to be given to these feelings of love, anger, and everything else in-between.

Audre Lorde writes, “for there are no new ideas. There are only new ways of making them felt…”. We specifically look for work that finds itself wrapped up in weeds, that flows down the river bed, plays with syntax seeded in dampened soil, we want writing that pushes a different way of seeing. In the garden, we believe that writing grows in places that we never expected it to grow. From a one liner of a shitty movie to a painting you saw in a random small town, share how it inspired  your writing with us when you submit.

This magazine are for the people who went to bed upset, who believe that their words can change the world, for those who feel joy in the most unexpected places, for those who have been waiting for a revolution, for those who’ve felt like a ghost, for those who couldn’t help but wonder if all the pages they wrote were worth the pain, for those who believe there is still hope in the growing pains of it all.
