VOLUNTEER STAFF APPLICATIONS
Beneath the Garden Magazine is looking for hard-working passionate creatives. We want people to join our team who believe in our mission statement and the drive to uplift voices that may go unnoticed.
Applicants should be fluent in English, mission statement, submission guidelines, and the aesthetics of the magazine. Since our magazine receives a series of submissions that may include more sensitive topics, applicants must be 18 years or older.
All Beneath the Garden Magazine team members are volunteered and unpaid. Our magazine is ran purely on the hard work and kindness of our staff. Due to this reason, we coordinate our schedules and discuss workload capabilities to keep the magazine going and take care of our team.

EDITORIAL ASSISTANT
We are seeking an Editorial Assistant who is passionate about contemporary literature and creative writing to oversee our editorial operations, online production, and lead our remote team of editors. This role offers valuable experience in digital publishing and literary magazine management.
Assists Editor-in-Chief in managing the overall editorial calendar and publication schedule for issues.
Edit and proofread final content before publication.
Coordinate with section editors to ensure timely review of submissions.
Maintain magazine inbox, processing and answering inquiries as needed (i.e submission/publication status, withdrawing submission, etc.
Tracking and reporting website logistics.
Collaborate with Marketing Manager on website design, copy, and management.
Qualifications: Experience with Google Workspace, Strong editorial and proofreading skills, excellent organizational and project management skills, ability to work independently and with a remote team, strong attention to detail, and excellent written and verbal communication.
Preferred qualifications: Prior experience in editorial roles at literary magazines or publication, experience with Squarespace, experience with Discord, and passionate about literature and film.

GENRE EDITORS
We are seeking genre editors in (poetry, creative non-fiction, and hybrid). These roles offer valuable experience in the editing process of a literary magazine while also creating connections with a small knit team! The ideal candidate would be someone with strong interpersonal skills, who is a self-starter and motivated for the work we are doing at Beneath the Garden Magazine.
Lead acceptance and rejection process of submissions in genre, potentially working with readers.
Reading through the “slush” pile to identify and select high-quality writing for publication, based on BTG Mag’s aesthetic and style.
Check for spelling, grammar, and formatting errors. (We understand that with writing means playing with components as above. This will be more applicable to nonfiction essays).
Send out acceptance and rejection emails to writers.
Coordinate with editorial team regarding submissions process and managing call for submissions.

MARKETING MANAGER
We are seeking a Marketing Manager who is passionate, not only about the works that we publish, but how marketing can serve as a point of amplifying writer’s voices/stories! The right candidate blends creativity with strategy, and has a deep appreciation for literature, art, and alternative media. If you believe that words—and the people behind them—can change the world, you belong in the garden.
Increase visibility and outreach with the support of the publishing team.
Draft, edit, and proofread social media copy.
Brainstorm and implement marketing strategies while adhering to BTG style guide.
Collaborate with Graphic Designer on marketing material and posts.
Manage socials (currently Instagram, X, Bluesky, and Threads) including responding to comments, direct messages, & follow requests.
Collaborate in generative meetings with Editor-in-Chief, Editorial Assistant, and Graphic Designer regarding publication to Beneath the Garden Magazine’s website.
Skills Needed: Experience working with social media platforms (Instagram, X, Bluesky, and Threads), familiarity with creator tools on socials listed.
Qualifications: Experience with Google Workspace, knowledge of social media marketing strategies, excellent organizational and project management skills, ability to work independently and with a remote team, strong attention to detail, and excellent written and verbal communication.
Preferred qualifications: Prior experience in marketing at literary magazines or publication or in a related field, experience with Squarespace, experience with Discord, some experience with SEO, and passionate about literature and film.

GRAPHIC DESIGNER
We are seeking a Graphic Designer to bring visual life to the stories we publish—stories rooted in the unseen, the unsaid, and the unexpectedly beautiful. This role is for someone who sees design as narrative, who understands that layout, typography, and imagery can evoke as much emotion as language itself.
Create graphic designs for social media and website.
Collaborate with editors and contributors to visually interpret literary and artistic works.
Maintain and evolve the visual identity of Beneath the Garden with consistency, care, and imagination.
Assist in website layout when needed. (There is potential in helping with magazine layout, but we are still at the stage in our magazine where it is still digitally published).
Qualifications: Graphic design experience, fluency in Adobe Creative Suite (especially InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator) or equivalent tools, experience with Squarespace, excellent organizational and project management skills, ability to work independently and with a remote team, strong attention to detail, and excellent written and verbal communication.
Preferred qualifications: Passionate about literature and film.
